Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has thrown his weight behind out-of-form batter Virat Kohli. He said that despite the lack of runs from Kohli’s blade, it is still a bit too early to worry about his place in the T20 World Cup squad. While admitting that Kohli has been struggling, Gavaskar pointed out that the likes of skipper Rohit Sharma and some others have also failed to deliver in recent times.

33-year-old Kohli managed only 12 runs in the two games that he played against England in the T20I series. Former Indian cricketers like Kapil Dev and Virender Sehwag have questioned Kohli’s place in the T20 squad.

Asked for his reaction, Gavaskar told Sports Tak, "See, I cannot understand that when Rohit Sharma does not score runs no one talks about it. It is the same with other players as well. There is a saying that form is temporary, class is temperament. See, the kind of template they are adopting (in T20Is) where they have to swing the bat from ball one, you will succeed and fail," Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

The legend, who recently turned 73, believes that India have a good selection committee which is thinking about it. He also added that there is enough time to announce the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will be played in Australia.

The former captain said, “There will be several competitive Asian countries participating in the event. You will have to pick your team keeping in mind the form of a player. There is no need to panic yet and we need to give them some time.”

Gavaskar further asserted that the one-day series in England is a good opportunity for Kohli to try and rediscover his touch. He commented, “I think the ODI series has come at the right time. It suits his natural game. Like in Test cricket, there is enough time to settle down. In ODI cricket too the batter can play himself in according to the conditions.”

According to latest reports, Kohli is likely to miss the first ODI against England at the Oval on Tuesday (July 12) after sustaining a groin strain during the third T20I.
